Aussie

Today my family sadly said good-bye to our beloved dog, Aussie.

My Gramma Cone and Aussie at the cabin in 2002.

I have many great Aussie memories. She was my barn dog while I taught horseback riding lessons. Aussie was a natural herder and kept the horses in line when the kids were out in the pasture catching them. She also took more than a few hooves to the head preventing my students and I from being squashed by stampeding horses. She was always protective.  After I sold my horses, Aussie retired from farm work to become what I like to call a “cabin dog.”

She loved to go for walks in the woods, a dip in the lake and fetch her stick. Since I believe in doggie Heaven, I know she’s doing all her favorite things.

Aussie, you will be missed.

Best Friends

Our big dog Bear may weigh in close to the 100 pound mark, but he’s a lover not a fighter.

Tonight, we were just taking it easy and Elisabeth thought she’d like to go for a Bear ride. Bear is pretty easy going and doesn’t seem to mind because she’ll pet him too. He’ll do anything for attention.

But first, HUGS!

Check out that form, she just needs a Bear-sized saddle. I think Bear is thinking, “what the heck, there is a perfectly good pony right there.”

Bear Ride 4

They had a great ride, so Elisabeth is going to wind down with a bedtime story.

Bear Ride 5

This must be a great book! Note that Indie is passed out behind on the sofa…

Bear Ride 6

We have some pretty good dogs. Well, except for the sneaking up on the sofa part.

All Dressed Up

Patty and kids

A perfect day for costumes! Bear is dressed as a unicorn with a princess riding on his back, Indie is a butterfly, Elisabeth is a dragon baby and I am a nerd. Okay, I was totally kidding about me, that’s how I always look!

Discovering Fall

Fall is my favorite season, I love the cool, crisp air and the leaves. Time slows back down a little bit too.

Elisabeth is not particularly impressed with many toys or at least the toys we have. However, she loves the leaves. We took the dogs on a walk and she got play in the leaves afterward. It was so fun for her to look at each one and then rip it to pieces.

First Fall

After an hour in the great outdoors, it was time for a nap. A NAP! Not a lot of napping occurs at our house so this was a special treat for me! Hot cocoa and crochet…A perfect afternoon.

MINE!

I have come to the realization that if the baby gets a toy, Bear and Indie also need that same toy. So when Elisabeth was given a cute little rubber ducky for the tub the dogs thought it was to share.

It was not, in fact, no kid wants their toy covered in dog slobber.

The next trip to the store I picked up a couple of duckies for the dogs. Indie ate the beak off hers in a second and Bear is protecting his with his life.

You should hear the growling when Indie looks at it.

Catch

Indie and Bear are adapting well to life with a baby, they are especially in love with the walks down to the park to play catch!

In Like A Lamb

Lioness

Well, March thus far has been relatively far from lion-like. We’ve had rain for the last week that thankfully has cleared the deck of a super huge glacier. My parents were concerned the deck would collapse into a giant pile of toothpicks if one more snowflake fell.  I called them yesterday with the intent of telling them the deck is ice cube free and we should celebrate with a picnic. There may be some serious cravings for summer bar-b-que food at my house. Yes, I know one should not eat hot dogs while pregnant. However, let’s say a plate of them were placed near me and mustard was available, I would eat three.

Back on track here, I never mentioned the deck or the picnic because I’ve been a bit distracted and sleepy. Maybe just a peek from the sun would help, how about a hot dog? Or maybe a cute dog picture?

Bear's Bored

Even Bear is feeling a little down about the weather, I found him at the window with his chin resting on the sill. I know he’s thinking it would be way more fun to bask in the sun.

While it’s still crappy out I think I clean out my closet. It’s a good day for that and I can cross off one more thing from my list, “To Do Before Baby Comes.” I have only eleven more weeks…

Doggone It

This time of year Indie and Bear suffer from extreme cabin fever which means I have to figure out more indoor activities for them to do.

They love toys that squeak, however, the goal is to kill the squeaker as quickly as possible. Note exhibit A and B.

Exhibit A and B

Within seconds of Indie ripping one of these clearance rack Santa squeakies out from my grasp, his face was torn open and much of the stuffing littered my living room. Poor Santa B, he was beheaded in the blink of an eye and his little rope body shredded to pieces…

Another favorite game is Hide and Seek with me. I can wear them out for about five minutes after playing this game, the side effect…I also wear myself out. On a side note, my expanding waistline has unfortunately limited the number of hiding places I can choose from to behind the curtains and in the bathtub. I swear I can hear them saying, “just look for the bump!”

Well, today I broke down and picked up their favorite bones today from the butcher because I have exhausted all other options. I hesitated to do this as they get pretty whiny and demanding when the bones are baking and then freezing. However, I’ll have some happy dogs for the next few days!

Yummy Homemade Dog Treats

With two big dogs, treats are a must, but they sure don’t last long…Very disappointing to the dogs and to me. I had experimented with various chews, bones and toys, not much keeps them entertained for long.  They like things that taste GOOD, I like things that are healthy for them and also, doesn’t cost a fortune.  Well, I have been stuffing toys and chews with a dog food mixture and then freezing. Indie and Bear love them.

Homemade Dog Treat Stuffing

3 cups dry dog food

1 can wet dog food

assorted toys and chews that can be stuffed (Kongs, empty dog bones and hooves are what I use and this mixture fills about 16)

Mix wet and dry dog food in a medium sized bowl and loosely stuff into toys. A butter knife works well. Then freeze. It’s pretty easy!

Who doesn’t love to lick the spoon?
