A Little Artist

Elisabeth has had a little cold so I’ve been trying to keep her busy inside. Her favorite toys and games are getting old. She really just wants to go outside. I’ve noticed her not-so subtle hints like putting on her coat and pounding on the patio door.

I had to pull out all the stops. It’s time to paint.

A few weeks ago, I found a piece of artwork in the garage. It was up at our old house but it doesn’t really fit the décor here. I moved it to the garage sale/donation pile. After a second thought, I realized I could upcycle the artwork and make it into something we wanted.

First, I painted over the original print with white paint that had primer in it. I let it dry and hauled it in for Elisabeth to make her own masterpiece.

I chose the colors and dabbed some paint for her right on the canvas.

Getting Started

Painting

She was so excited!

When she decided she was done, I cleaned her up and wiped off the frame. In hindsight, I should have just covered it with painters tape.

Brush Strokes

She disappeared for a moment and then came racing back to the kitchen crying. Apparently, I missed a smudge of paint on her forearm.

This was a really fun project. I admit I was worried about paint everywhere and the clean up, but it went really well. Now I’ll be on the lookout for great frames that could use some updated artwork.

So Long Summer

We’ve had an unseasonably warm fall, it was 80 degrees last week and in the upper 70s so far this week! I have been making sure we enjoy as much fun in the sun before it snows, it could be right around the corner…

Its been a busy summer and fall around here but I’ve accomplished a lot of things from my to do list. Here’s a little recap:
Baby Blanket

Baby Elisabeth has gotten so big! She took her first steps on my birthday. I couldn’t have imagined a more special gift. She still can only take a few steps before losing her balance. However, in a couple of weeks she’ll have tubes placed in her ears to help drain the fluid that’s been causing lots of ear infections. While I’m nervous about her having another surgery, I am looking forward to her feeling less ear pain, gaining better balance and taking less medication.

I’m so amazed at how far Elisabeth has come with her cochlear implant. It’s been on for three months now and she is more vocal than ever. She still isn’t saying any words besides Uh-oh but every week we hear her making new sounds and that is very exciting. Words will be here before we know it.

Getting Organized

So, I haven’t been able to walk into my craft room without being gouged by something. It was full of stuff, think of it as a dumping ground for all things that didn’t belong anywhere else.

I’ve been trying to clean up my craft room for a really, really long time now, the problem is the mess is overwhelming. Plus, it keeps multiplying. It’s hard to know where to start…

Note: there is no picture of the super messy craft room, it would break the camera.

Last week, I decided to take the plunge and just pull everything out. So, now no one except Baby Elisabeth can get down the hallway, it’s packed with stuff.

I broke out the drill and hung a couple of shelves today. They’re conveniently located above my sewing machine. To manage all of the small odds and ends I used hook and loop tape to attach baby food jars to the underside of the lower shelf. I thought of this initially as a quick fix but the more I think about the more I like it as a permanent solution.

I might even try a few of the leftover jars at my computer desk to wrangle the paper clips, rubber bands and push pins.

Finished!

It’s about time! This is a blanket I have been working on for at least a year and a half. I can only assume that my craft club is proud I finally finished a project.

Crocheted Shells

These crocheted shells took FOREVER, however, I do love the finished afghan and I would consider making another one as a gift. Now I can snuggle up and start my next project: Elisabeth’s baby blanket…

Mistaken Identity

Sometimes I have problems finishing projects…

I started crocheting this afghan last fall, I think it is a modified shell pattern.

I came back to it last weekend when I found it while cleaning, it was in a laundry basket filled with yarn. I added a couple rows to it and I thought everything was great, until I looked at it.

Unfortunately, I used the wrong size crochet hook! The first eight rows were crocheted with a G hook and the two additional rows were done with an H.   I can’t be certain how it happened. After showing it to my mom, she made me rip out the offending rows. I am glad she did, since I would have left them in and then regretted it when the blanket was finished.

I will finish it…seriously, I will.  You’ll see…You’ll all see.  (’cause there’ll be pictures.)
