We’re Back!

I’ve been missing this space! I keep thinking I need to ‘catch-up’ and then I feel overwhelmed, and then nothing happens… So here is a little recap from this fall.

SnugglesWe’re all taking a break from pickling. Baby Elisabeth loves snuggling with Grandpa!

BikeRiding bikes is a new favorite activity. It’s chilly here, so we’ve been getting bundled up. Elisabeth loves her hats, and in Minnesota, that’s a good thing.

fair jailAt the Minnesota State Fair there was an area in the cow barn for kids to try milking life-sized cow replicas. Well, Elisabeth was too small to care about milking this year but she was very interested in cow hoof anatomy. She positioned herself on the cow stand (the cow was securely bolted to it) and compared the front and back hooves.

Elisabeth was having a great time until the local “cow barn busybody” said we couldn’t allow our daughter to play on the cow. Technically, she wasn’t on the cow but we removed her anyway for fear of getting hauled off to Fair Jail. Every real cow in the barn then had to suffer through the temper tantrum that followed.

Fair-y Princess 3This was right after the cow episode. Elisabeth had made a full recovery from her temper tantrum when she tried her first Icee.

Minnesota PointThe family took a little trip up to Duluth this fall to see the leaves and explore Lake Superior. Indie and Bear joined us too! Both of the dogs and Elisabeth took a little dip in the lake. If you’ve ever been to Lake Superior, you know it’s really cold…

We also had our neighborhood block party this fall. The fire department brought a truck for the kids to check out. The big kids even got a chance to try the hose. The resulting puddles provided hours of entertainment for the little kids.

After some time away from writing I have a lot of new story ideas and can’t wait to share them with you. Stay tuned!

New Shelves

I’ve been busy around the house with projects this week. The bookshelves for Elisabeth’s room are finished! It’s a good feeling to cross something off the list.

These are the Ten Dollar Ledges plan from Ana White. She has so many great plans on her site and they are all free, so you cant beat that. I’ve also built longer versions of these shelves for our living room. My plan is to line the shelves with framed photos. I have already placed the frames on the shelves; however, they’re not painted and there are no photos in them yet. Don’t worry, it’s on the list.

Chris and I want her to have access to books and I thought these shelves offered a great way to display her favorites. I love that she can easily replace the books herself because it’s a little early to do that with a traditional bookshelf. These shelves will grow with her too, right now she can reach the two bottom shelves. The third can be reached from the crib which is nice because she likes to read to her stuffed animals after a nap.

Best Friends

Our big dog Bear may weigh in close to the 100 pound mark, but he’s a lover not a fighter.

Tonight, we were just taking it easy and Elisabeth thought she’d like to go for a Bear ride. Bear is pretty easy going and doesn’t seem to mind because she’ll pet him too. He’ll do anything for attention.

But first, HUGS!

Check out that form, she just needs a Bear-sized saddle. I think Bear is thinking, “what the heck, there is a perfectly good pony right there.”

They had a great ride, so Elisabeth is going to wind down with a bedtime story.

Bear Ride 5

This must be a great book! Note that Indie is passed out behind on the sofa…

We have some pretty good dogs. Well, except for the sneaking up on the sofa part.

Penny Pinching

I’m an earnest saver, it’s something my parents taught me at a very young age. I can remember walking up to up to the neighborhood bank with my passport saving book, my allowance and my sister. We’d deposit our money and stop at Bridgeman’s for an ice cream cone on the way home. Oh, the memories.

It’s never too early to teach kids to save, right? Elisabeth received a cute princess piggy bank as a baby gift from Tom and Pat, my parents neighbors.  Grandpa put the first quarter in and I’ve randomly been adding my leftover change.

Lately, Elisabeth has found great fun in putting things into containers. So I gave her a fist full of pennies and let her drop them in the bank. It took a little practice to get them in the slot but she was a pro in less than a minute. Pennies

All DoneElisabeth says, “I am ALL DONE!” When she say she’s done, she means it. I tried giving her a few more pennies however, she just wanted to eat them. I’m pretty sure we’ve already had enough hospital visits.

Getting Organized

So, I haven’t been able to walk into my craft room without being gouged by something. It was full of stuff, think of it as a dumping ground for all things that didn’t belong anywhere else.

I’ve been trying to clean up my craft room for a really, really long time now, the problem is the mess is overwhelming. Plus, it keeps multiplying. It’s hard to know where to start…

Note: there is no picture of the super messy craft room, it would break the camera.

Last week, I decided to take the plunge and just pull everything out. So, now no one except Baby Elisabeth can get down the hallway, it’s packed with stuff.

I broke out the drill and hung a couple of shelves today. They’re conveniently located above my sewing machine. To manage all of the small odds and ends I used hook and loop tape to attach baby food jars to the underside of the lower shelf. I thought of this initially as a quick fix but the more I think about the more I like it as a permanent solution.

I might even try a few of the leftover jars at my computer desk to wrangle the paper clips, rubber bands and push pins.

Strawberry Fields Forever

My strawberry patch was in a quarter of a raised bed and it has almost taken it over. The plants have also sent new plants over the edges and into the nature preserve. Not that I mind the strawberries are spreading.

Elisabeth and I picked berries, actually I picked while she ate her weight in strawberries.

I love the juice stained face, it’s so cute.

We even had a couple of helpers.

A Deer's Dinner

Baby Deer

Most of the berries were really ripe, so ripe that if I didn’t use them today, they only would’ve been good for the compost heap.

There were plenty of berries for a batch of strawberry jam AND strawberry rhubarb jam. I spent the evening canning and Elisabeth watched from her playpen. She wanted to see everything I was doing.

I think she’s going to be a good little helper someday.

Sidewalk Garden

When we first move into this house the shrubs along the sidewalk were so over grown you could barely get to the front door.

That first year, I trimmed them back, then they died. The second year, I cut them down and last year Chris removed the stumps. Now it’s our fourth year here and time to finally finish my sidewalk garden.

Yesterday, I removed a little over half of the rocks. I put them in with the other rocks on the the side of the house as I couldn’t find anyone who wanted them.

Not even for free.

I love progress…

I also found some treasures beneath those rocks, rusty nails, giant staples, a broken bracelet and this guy.

Monster

This little gargoyle, well, I think that’s what he is… has a new home in my strawberry patch.

Maybe he can scare the bunnies away.

Spring Clean Up!

Hoppy Easter!

I hope you had a nice Easter! It was a beautiful day and we had a wonderful time celebrating with family.

Today is also beautiful and it’s the perfect weather to work on my spring garden cleanup!

Also, the wreath is still up on my front door…

wreath

I have been waiting to take it down because a bird started to built her nest here and I just couldn’t take it away from her! Sadly, it’s been several days since I’ve last seen her so, I think she may have moved on.

I’m a little disappointed I won’t get to see the baby birds up close.

Well, I better quick take the wreath down before some other critter decides to move in or my neighbors complain!

A Big Birthday

Yesterday was Chris’ 40th birthday, he didn’t think it was a big deal but I felt like doing something special for him anyway. He deserves it!

cake

Chris requested a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, I made the cake but cheated on the frosting. Thank you neighborhood grocery store bakery department!

I also hosted a little surprise pizza party for him, unfortunately the roads were not that great so the turnout was small. We still had a fabulous time. Elisabeth had fun watching Chris open his cards and presents, she wanted to hold and look at each card. After studying each one carefully, into her mouth it would go!

cards

I considered getting Chris some sort of gag gift…however, I’d like to avoid payback in the future, so it didn’t happen. However, the neighbors gave him this!

I Got A New Set of Wheels

Being nine months pregnant feels like being a stuffed sausage. When I feel good though, I need to take full advantage of that. After my doctor appointment this past week I was feeling pretty great so I took a little detour over to the thrift store. Look what I found!

Desk Chair

It was $11.21!

It was love at first sight. However, I didn’t grab it immediately, I wandered through the store and decided I could use a new desk chair. I headed back, it was still there. Whoo Hoo!

I thought of a couple more things I should look for and that would give me time to test out the chair. As I wheeled through the store,  I noticed numerous glances and some glares in my direction.  Also, I was being followed. Dunh-dunh-DUNH!

Somewhere between the oven mitts and cast iron skillets an older gentleman stopped me and inquired if I’d be actually buying the chair. He informed me it was a solid piece of furniture and “oh the wheels, the wheels…they are fully functional. You can’t find chair made like that nowadays.” He then informed me that it is likely that the chair will outlive me…wait, was that a threat?

Wheel

While I continued my shopping six other people stopped me about the chair.

Yes, it is that awesome.

Well, I made it out alive with my unborn child and my new-found chair and arrived safely at home. It will be a great little project after baby arrives. Until then.
